Check it out here: $5 Meal Ideas for your Family

This was my $5.00 meal last night, probably the easiest one ever but I was pressed for time so I had to just come up with something quick before my child lost her mind!

Homemade Turkey Meatballs with Penne and Jar Sauce (Don't judge the jar sauce, it works great when you don't have a lot of time)
1 lb Foster Farms Ground Turkey $1.99 ( I use turkey just because I don't like ground beef)
Egg and seasoned bread crumbs for meatballs $ .25
Barilla Penne $ .50 (got with coupons)
Prego Jar Sauce $ .75 (got with coupons)
Total $3.49
( A salad would have been a nice addition but I just didn't get everything together)
Is pasta and sauce your old standby too?

Thinking about flying this summer, a few Airports that have child play areas

If you've ever flown with your children you know how stressful it is, you just hope and pray that they fall asleep during the flight and if they don't then you just do everything you can to keep them quiet and in their seat. We flew earlier this month out of Seatac and they have a childrens play area in the terminal so we took our 4 yr old daughter and let her run and get out a bunch of energy before we got on the plane and let me tell you it was the best thing ever and she did so great. More and more airports are getting on board so to speak and building kids play areas, according to
USA Today these airports have play areas.

Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport
Boston Logan International Airport
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
Chicago O'Hare International Airport
Las Vegas McCarran International Airport
Washington Dulles International Airport
Nashville International Airport
Orlando International Airport
San Francisco International Airport
Seattle Tacoma International Airport

You can read details for each one in this USA Today article, there are many more not included in this article so you can check with your local airport ahead of time if it's not on this list.
This is such a great idea it benefits the parents the child and the passengers around the child!
What airport play areas have you visited and how was it?

Who says it's too expensive to eat healthy?

How many times have you heard people talk about why they can't eat healthier? Sure it's usually easier to get fast food but there are unlimited meals that are easy and inexpensive. Additionally I really enjoy using fresh ingredients rather than packaged. I admit I use a lot of frozen veggies at times but that's only because I can't make it to the store frequently enough to continuously stock the fresh produce. Keeping with Michelle's theme of Meal's Around $5 this was our dinner tonight.

Last week at Fred Meyer they had Fresh Cod on sale for $3.99 per pound. I asked how much a whole fillet weighed and was surprised to find out that it wasn't even a pound. Apparently Cod is not very dense therefore doesn't weigh much.

Earlier in the week my husband zero'd in on the Chayote Squash at Winco. They were $0.88 each.

I cooked the Cod in a little Olive Oil, Lemon juice and pepper. I cooked the Chayote in Olive Oil, minced garlic and salt & pepper. Served with some brown rice and Voila! The entire family ate for less than $5.00 and our meal was healthy and easy.

My son wanted to take a picture of his plate too!
He loved it all!

I need help, too many phones, too many plans, too much money????

If I haven't said it before I'll say it again, we are so cheap (I will clarify we, the Husband and I) (Karen I know you're as cheap as me but I won't speak for you), I say we are so cheap because we don't have fancy iPhones, we don't have smartphones, we don't even have texting........we're probably the only people on the planet that don't text, we just have the free phones that you get every 2 years and all we can do is call people, our phones are at least 3 years old and in cell phone years that's like 100 years old. We need new phones and we have been putting it off because we both want smartphones but don't want to admit it to each other because it will make our cell phone bill even more ridiculously expensive than it already is, we have been casually making comments to each like this:
Him: "What do you want to do"
Me: "I don't know what do you want to do"
Him: " I don't know......we could go look at phones"
Me: "Why? Do you want to look at phones"
Him: "I don't know......... Why? do you want to look at phones"
Me: "We could....but we don't have to"
Him: "Well I just thought if you wanted to"
Me: "Well I don't need to, we can do something else"
Him: " Ok  (long pause)  well we could just look"
AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH Just admit it we want smartphones with internet access and fancy gadgets and fancy applications that we really don't need and that will make our cell phone bill double, but it would be fun right!!!!!!!!!!

So we are no longer in a contract and have no loyalty to any particular provider, anybody have any thoughts? Is it really worth it to pay all that extra money to have a fancy phone and internet access? Should I just stick with what I have and save the money, I know it would be fun but do we really need it?

This deal is back: San Francisco Bay Coffee K Cups $ .38 each from Amazon

I've had a few people ask me to keep my eyes open for good deals on K Cups, here's one from Amazon. Regular price $15.99 for 36, if you choose the subscribe and save option the price drops to $13.59 or $ .38 each, seems like a pretty good price for those. Remember to choose 6 months and then go back and cancel after your order has shipped.

Use scarves to accessorize, an inexpensive way to dress up a pair of jeans and a shirt

I think scarves are a great inexpensive way to change the look of an outfit without spending a fortune on jewelry or other clothes. I have 2 pashminas that Karen gave me and I just throw one on with a pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt and I get a ton of compliments. I really think it adds a flair of elegance to an outfit even if it is my $7.00 old navy long sleeve tee & my $6.00 jeans from target or if you have a cute little black cocktail dress throw on a pink or bright colored scarf. I'm sure the really crafty people out there (not me) could even make their own scarves.

Thanks Tip Junkie for the photo!

This is the brownish copper colored scarf I have, sorry I know I look ridiculus taking my own photo but the only other person in the house was a 4 yr old.

This is the other one I have, I love the blue and it goes with a lot of my clothes, obviously not this shirt but you get the idea!

Make the Lofthouse style Frosted Sugar Cookies at home

Ok cookie lovers this one's not really a money saver but I had to share, I found this blog Authentic Suburban Gourmet and she has found the closest recipe to those sugar Lofthouse cookies. You know the ones that come out every holiday with the colored frosting and they are so sinfully soft and delicious that you could eat the whole package. I guess this could be a money saver if you made your own instead of buying them at the store right? I really want to try these: Lofthouse style Frosted Sugar Cookies

Success! Get your veggies in a smoothie!

So you may have picked up from my previous posts that I am a freaky eater. I have issues with texture and color and mixing foods. It is very important to me that I don't pass my weird issues onto my son. Now that he's getting older he's starting to question where my veggies are while he's eating his. I can't hide and lie to him forever, he's too smart for that. I've heard so much about how yummy smoothies are and I'm told you can mix lot's of veggies into them. Tonight I decided to give it a try. I used what I had in the house and a recipe from a friend (Lisa H).

Here's what I made:
2 cups Spinach
1 cup Cold Water
1 Banana
A handful of mixed berries - I had frozen blueberries
1 scoop of Vanilla Protein powder

Blend until smooth. Now the color is not too appetizing. It's definitely a mind over matter thing. I closed my eyes and tasted it. Absolutely Yummy!!!  The colder the better and the amount was too much for one person. I think it's more of a 2 person serving. The taste was great but I had to really concentrate to not think about the color. My son liked the taste but he couldn't get over the look. He said "smoothies are supposed to be pink". I think he'd do great with a fruit smoothie but I don't know any other way to get the veggies into a pink smoothie! But if I'm being honest, I'm the problem, not him. So far he's a pretty good veggie eater!
(Sorry, I don't know why it rotated)
Some of you have already shared your favorite recipes. I'd love to hear all your tips for me and my little monkey!

Red Beans and Rice last night, another $5.00 meal

Here's another one to add to the list of $5.00 meals, we love this one.
Red Beans and Rice
I start with this packet and add onion, red pepper, can of beans, can of diced tomatoes.
Vigo Red Beans & Rice packet $2.00
Onion $ .25
Red Pepper $1.00
FM Brand Red Beans $ .39 (normally $ .50 but this one was dented)
S&W Diced Tomatoes $ .50
Salt, Pepper, Oil $ .25
Total $4.50 This feeds 3 of us and leftovers for lunch the next day

Start by softening the onion and red pepper in canola oil

Start following packet directions add 3 1/2 cups water and bring to a boil (use the juice from the can of tomatoes as part of the water to add flavor) add the rest of ingredients, rice and beans package, drained can of beans. It will look like this.

Cover and simmer on low for 20-25 minutes

The finished product.....you've got your protein and veggies and carbs all in one. You could add bread or a salad or whatever you want. I don't make it spicy because of my daughter but my husband likes to add Tabasco.

Check out our other $5 Meal Ideas.

FREE Starbucks = FREE Starbucks

I love when you get something free from something free, I'll tell you what I mean. I got a $5 Starbucks gift card in the mail from my credit card company (I guess they were feeling generous) anyway I was shopping at Safeway and they have a Starbucks in the store so I treated myself to a coffe and used my gift card to pay, when I got my receipt the cashier told me to go online and fill out a survey and bring my receipt back for a free tall drink of my choice. I love it! So FYI not sure if it's all the Safeways but if you buy a Starbuck's you might get a free drink.

Are you on Pinterest? WE ARE! All the cool kids are doing it!

Did you know Sister with Stuff is on Pinterest? Have you heard of Pinterest? An easy explanation I use for Pinterest is it's a social networking site like Facebook but instead of communication with words you use pictures. You will love and hate Pinterest at the same time, you love it because it's so fun to pin all those beautiful pictures but at the same time you hate it because it's such a time suck so you have to control yourself otherwise you lose HOURS!!!! Pinterest is great if you are a crafter or a do it yourselfer or if you are into cooking or travel or gardening or cake decorating, sewing, I could go on forever.
Search for Sisters with Stuff on Pinterest, if you need an invitation just let us know and we'll send you one. Once I figure out how to do it I'll add a "Pin It" button to the posts. Does anybody know how?
